Young athlete health screening
Terviseuuringud.ee participates in a prevention project funded by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund, “Young Athletes’ Health Screening for the Prevention of Sports-Related Health Risks.”
Health examinations for young athletes who belong to the target group are funded from the Health Insurance Fund’s healthcare insurance budget, and the patient is only required to pay a 5 € visit fee.
We accept young athletes up to 19 years of age (inclusive) for the young athletes’ health screening, provided they train and compete regularly for at least 6 academic hours per week in addition to physical education classes
(one academic hour = 45 minutes).
Young athletes who train and compete less than six academic hours per week are monitored by their family physicians as part of routine health check-ups.
Physician appointments take place in Tallinn, Sepapaja 12/1, 4th floor, Ülemiste City district (Health Building 2).
NEW option! With a single blood draw, it is now possible to obtain a more comprehensive overview of laboratory results. In addition to standard tests, additional analyses can be ordered for the young athlete’s health screening. Your selection can be made via the online registration system.

Target group
The young athletes’ health screening is intended for young people up to 19 years of age (inclusive) who, in addition to physical education classes, train and compete regularly for at least 6 academic hours per week
(one academic hour = 45 minutes).
Young athletes who train and compete less than six academic hours per week are monitored by family physicians as part of routine health check-ups.
The scope, content, and frequency of the health examination depend on the young athlete’s weekly training load, health status, and the results of the primary examinations.
- 6–9 academic hours per week, including competitions – **Health Examination Complex A** (every two years)
- 10 or more academic hours per week, including competitions – **Health Examination Complex B or C** (once per year)
Based on the examination results, the physician issues a decision granting permission to participate in sports or, if health problems are identified, sets restrictions on sports participation.
If the young athlete belongs to the target group, an appointment for the health examination can be booked by completing the contact form (above).
IMPORTANT!
Before the examination, we ask the young athlete and the parent to review the health examination guidelines.
- On the day before the examination, only light training is allowed; preferably, it should be a rest day.
- For the examination to be carried out, it is important that the athlete’s health condition is good and that there are no injuries. At least a couple of weeks should have passed since any acute illness (fever, viral or infectious diseases, cough, runny nose).
- To ensure that the examination results are valid and accurately reflect the young athlete’s health status, all training should be avoided on the day of the examination.
- It is important that the young athlete eats **2–3 hours before the examination** and consumes sufficient fluids. Coffee or strong tea should not be consumed on the day of the examination.
PLEASE BRING TO THE EXAMINATION:
- A document with a personal identification code;
- Sportswear and sports shoes;
- Washing items;
- Visit fee 5 € (for examinations carried out within the prevention project).
Health examination packages for young athletes
As part of the Health Insurance Fund’s prevention project, three different health examination complexes have been developed for young athletes. Which complex (A, B, or C) is performed as the initial examination depends on the young athlete’s training load, the nature of the sport, health status, and the results of the primary examinations.
Complex A:
- Initial specialist consultation (including medical examination, health screening summary, and issuance of a medical certificate);
- Resting ECG;
- Spirometry;
The duration of this health examination package is 30 minutes.
Complex B:
- Initial specialist consultation (including medical examination, health screening summary, and issuance of a medical certificate);
- Resting ECG;
- Exercise ECG test on a bicycle ergometer (performed by a sports physician);
- Spirometry;
- Physiotherapy service for the prevention of sports injuries. The target group includes young athletes aged **13–17** who train **10 or more academic hours per week** in athletics or team sports (football, basketball, volleyball, handball, floorball, ice hockey).
The duration of this health examination is approximately 45 minutes.
For medical indications and upon referral by a physician, additional examinations may also be carried out within the prevention project.
